Weekend Exposure -- How High Was the Flood?

Finally, I've had some time to take pictures of the pool level near the place where I work, in Prospect, Kentucky.  As many of you may remember, we had flooding this spring in April.  The water slowly receded, and for about the past month, the river has been at or near normal pool, (about 412' msl at the water company).  Here are pictures of just how high the water came up!

It was too hot to take many pictures on Friday-- but I did the best I could. You can see just how high the water was in April. Cunninghams took about 6 weeks to open, but they 're back in business! Yeeeehaaaa!

From these pictures, you can tell how very much I love to eat at Cunninghams-- scenic and good food for reasonable prices. Its one of our favorite hangouts!

We were lucky, we only got a little water in our basement a few times, but some people really had a LOT of water. It was a mess!

However, Cunninghams updated while they re-did stuff and it is even better than before! Nicer furniture, party lights along the railings... What FUN!

Wish you could be here, to go with us!

Excellent comparison photos, Dowser! I'm so glad that the waters have receded, especially at Cunninghams. I'm becoming quite fond of the place myself, though I don't think it's as well known as Jay's Diner:)

It is only a local dive, so to speak, but I surely do love it. You can have a nice nice meal under $10, with all this wonderful atmosphere... Feed the ducks.... watch the yachts go by. Sigh, we'll have to go this week sometime!!! ;-)

I still have all those bread crusts in the frig from the VineMeet-- I saved them for the ducks!

I wish you were closer for LOTS of reasons! (Not just Cunninghams, although that may be one of the better reasons...)

Someday, dear friend. Someday, maybe we can meet halfway or something. Say, have you ever been to Lexington, VA? Now THAT is a great place to go! I really want to go back there, someday. Natural Bridge, the VMI, Washington Lee University... A town of much charm!

Definitely been to Lexington -- used to have lots of family there, but they've all passed on. Not sure when you were last at Natural Bridge, but I've heard it's become VERY touristy, though some of the trails are still open.

I still plan to get out your way for the geneology research, but it will have to wait until I have brakes - LOL:)

Well, it's been about 10 years since we were there last... We took a wonderful car safari, and I had a zebra in my lap! I did not know, but found out, that zebras eyelashes are striped, too! We took the ghost tour of Lexington, and had such a lovely time. It was a great place for a family vacation, if a bit far.

I was the only one that wanted to go and see the VMI, so, after pleading and pleading, my husband drove me through it. I wanted to go see the museum! We took flowers to Robert E. Lee, and the ladies were so sweet about it. But, it has been taken over by the Feds, and while they will have the money to keep it up-- I really missed it like it used to be about 35 years ago...

Trails are not my thing, anyway. I'm too old and its too hot out. ;-)

I will look forward to driving over to see you when you come with your new brakes! :-)

Well, rottlady, I managed, that is, we managed, to get to Cunningham's, and twice to boot! And it is everything Dowser's says it is! A terrific little watering hole! Darned good food, at darned good prices! I wish the whole gang could have gotten there! Not a doubt in my mind, everyone would have loved the place! It's just comfy, cozy, relaxed, and really cool on the river! I wanna go again! And again! And again!

Nice pics Dowser! Dramatic differences to be sure!

Great comparison photos, it looks like the water was about 15 to 20 feet up? Wow, that's awful, but I'm glad you're drying out and didn't have much personal damage.

Yep, it was only about 5' below the 100 year flood stage. My house is about 10' above the 500 year flood stage, so we were lucky. It just kept raining and raining and raining...

Thanks for coming to see me!

Thanks, dear jobs! Most of the people that got water into their houses had the time to move everything out and up. But, the walls, etc. were a mess, and it took a lot of effort to get it all back together. Cunninghams took 6 weeks to open, and the Harrods Landing bottom floor has yet to open. Nothing stops the water company.

If it happens every year, it could be doing some long term damage to the structural integrity of the foundation and the walls. It's tough when you come up against the forces of nature. Not a lot you can do. But, good to see they are back in business.

It happens every 10 years or so, and yep, its bad when it does. Most people have leveled their homes and businesses and rebuilt on the original "footers", I think that's what they call the concrete pad around the edge of a concrete block building... I think.

I'm glad Cunninghams is open-- I've been going there just about all my life, and used to bowl with the former owner, Buzz Parsons, who is/was a fantastic guy! I can't imagine them abandoning it, but maybe someday, they'll have to tear it down and rebuild...

Two of my favorite restaurants in Louisville, Cunninghams and Captain's Quarters-- Kingfish is also a biggie! Kingfish was dry, but the road was flooded out!

Holly-- for a bit there, I was wondering if I was going to make it into work! The office of the water company where I work is above the 1937 flood level, but the roads aren't...

Take care and thanks so much for coming to see me!

I was wondering if Fema is planning on helping the victims of the flooding. I just saw on the news five minutes ago that they are denying help to the victims of flooding in southern Indiana.

Fema has told everyone in this area, both sides of the river, that if you want to rebuild your home, you can-- only on the existing footers, (?), or base, where your original house stands, AND that you must build your main structure, (which includes furnace, etc.), above the 1937 flood level. People carry flood insurance, at a HUGE cost per year, and all it fixes is the walls and general structure, i.e. re-wiring, etc. (Meaning: No new homes in the Floodway.)

Most people's homes are way up in the air, with the garage at the bottom, to deal with the FEMA regulations. So, I can see why FEMA won't cover it-- it happens every 10 years or so, and it costs a lot of money.

My husband's brother lives on the river in a house that was flooded in the lower story. While I feel somewhat sorry for him-- I don't feel too sorry for him. He knew what he was getting into when he bought the house. They moved everything up before the lower level flooded, and he has managed to re-wire and replace the drywall downstairs. He still has to buy new carpet.

I can understand why people want to live on the river-- but the flip side of that is that the river floods, regularly. So, most of us, even though we want to live on the river, stay up on high ground.

I hope I don't sound harsh, because that isn't my intention. But you don't move next to a busy airport, then complain about the noise. For my brother-in-law, it is a trade off that he willingly makes. Their house has an elevator, so moving stuff up isn't too difficult. But more than I'd want to do, for sure!

Take care, danny! Thanks for coming by!

Thanks-- Now you know why I was so shocked! On highway 42, which goes right by Harrods Landing, the boats were almost at eye level. That was a WOW! And the upper deck of the Belle was even with the highway... That, too, was a shocker!

Thanks for coming to see me! Hope all the babies are well!

Thanks for asking! Everyone is well. Iggy has a tooth alignment problem and needs to have the vet trim his incisors every 4 weeks or so in order to keep them from becoming overgrown. He just had it done today and for the time being isn't squeaking to me. He'll get over it, though. :-)

Oh dear. I can dig it.

Worst thing is that Iggy, as you probably know, is a hamster-at-law, and I think he's consulting with his partner Fuzzy-Sozo in Colorado to determine whether my dragging him to the vet is actionable. I don't think so, but you never know ... :-D

All of the rodent family is in cahoots.

Oh gosh, dear Mrs. D-- if I stop, I'll gel.

I got most of the patio furniture painted and it looks great! When I get it all done, I'll take a picture to share! The hardest part is getting it ready to paint. And, not 20 minutes after the paint dried 'to touch', a bird diddled on one of my chairs, nasty little thing.

I do love them, but quit diddling on my furniture! ;-)

Love you, very much, dear Mrs. D. Hope you're seeing some light at the end of the tunnel!
