Friendship -- A Matter of the Heart

A caring friend can make life wonderful!

Advertise | AdChoices

Friendships can do more to help each other than we realize! A 20 year study shows that friendship can help prevent many diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and depression. In fact, a study completed at Duke University showed that unmarried people with a close friend had a 85% better chance of survival of heart disease over a five year period.

One of the more recent studies at the University of Birmingham, AL, showed that people with close friendships had more "killer" cells, boosting their immunity. A network of friends has been often demonstrated in helping cancer survivors stay healthy for longer periods of time, and helps one to survive a life crisis, such as the death of a spouse or loved one. A new study shows that if one has had a heart attack, you are much more likely to not have another heart attack, if you have a circle of close friends and support.

All of us know that friendship adds joy to our days-- and that even a networking site, like Newsvine, can help provide additional friends and a support network. Friendship on a social networking site, enables one to meet people that have the same interests you have, compare notes about specific subjects, and remove the barriers of space and time to forming close friendships.

As we move through life, gather your friends closely to you, share your heart, and care about one another. Not only is it good for your mental health, it is good for your physical health, as well!

Thanks to all of my friends here on Newsvine!

To all of us with medical conditions-- Know that you are loved!

Thank you for coming by to see me!

Hey Dowser,

I agree with your sentiments ...

And here's my musical addition ...

Now, I'm never good at who is who-- Crosby is on the left, is that Stills or Nash in the middle? I love to hear them...

I agree, Rachel, the words in the "CSN" song fit the article beautifully; "let's let the water carry us away" ..be that as it may.. in friendship - thick or thin - in emotional caring and support for one another. Loved all the pics, Dowser.

Friends are so valuable. I have critter friends and friends from elementary school in addition to others I've picked up over the years. I'm closer to my friends than I am to my sibs.

I lean on them and they lean on me. And yes, they are great for the entire family. When my kids were teens, several of my friends were like additional mothers, taking them in when they wanted to "run away" and talking them through troubling times.

My best friend from elementary school helped take care of both of my parents as they aged and died. She considered my dad as her dad and although she was never close to my mom when we were young, she was on hand to help her when she needed it.

Loving a friend goes deep and lasts long.

Friendship - the true kind - not the kind where someone is your friend because of what they can get from you, or through you, is to be treasured.

A friend tells the truth when others tell you what they think you want to hear.

A friend stands by you even if for some reason you are not standing by them.

Friends are loyal.

Friends show you real love, real respect, and the real world, and are there to share it with you - the good and bad alike.

I appreciate the friendship that I have found in my life. I appreciate those that help others in need.

I add my support for those who are sieged by illness of any type, or a bad relationship, or anything like it.

Thank you Dowser for giving me this opportunity to pay homage to all friends of anyone.....you are all appreciated.

Well said, USC. I am a NV friend, but feel a friendship in kindred spirit, as well. A true friend takes risks and tests the friendship with honesty, all others are in a 'popularity' contest and looking for ego-boosting. I agree that friends should stand by for emotional support, but I don't think the support should be just because you are friends; it should be because you know for a fact that one of you was harmed. Thank you for being one of the many 'real' people here.

Dowser: Thank you....our friendship requests have no doubt crossed as I just sent one too...far later than I should have.

CL 1: Thank you again for your kind words, for being there, and for your amazing ability to have insight into what I've at times written here on the vine.

Yes, I do now have a greying short beard, and probably will in the future add gray to whatever head hair I'm destined to retain (looking at family picture as I write). That grayness is a sign of "having been there and done that" and I hope improving what I've passed upon and leaving it better than I found it. I will never remove any greyness from my hair, as I've earned every lock, and all those that look upon me should be aware that in front of them stands a man who is as real as he can be......for better or for worse......

Let us all together celebrate real friendship, and hope that all others at some time in their lives, in some way, will experience it themselves.

Thank you Ladies - both my friends - for being a good thing in my life, and my day.

Friendship..............."I belong, we belong".............the longing to belong is in all of us. There is so much loneliness in this world and sometimes I just wonder why that is. More and more in modern life, people do not want to get to know each other, and I think it is very sad. True friendship-the ability to be yourself, truly listen and relate to each other, loyalty, and more is rare and to be treasured. Furry friends included of course!! And I agree, it really does improve health. Love, sharing and caring. I'd like to be at that picnic too!!

Thank you for being my friend, Dowser, from yours.................Theresa

I, too, agree that friendships are important. However, there are a few drawbacks too. My best friend has always been my spouse. I had no problem spending all my time with him because we just got along well and enjoyed each others company without any false pretenses. My other friends tended to have a hard time with that because they could not understand why I would want to spend all my time with him and not them. That then causes stress. I have also found that many times my friends seem to believe that they are experts at running my relationships. Forget the fact that their relationships leave a lot to be desired - they still feel the need to tell you how to run yours. I've always tried to be sensitive of that because really, only the two individuals in the relationship really know what the facts are. I know my friends mean well though so I cut them some slack and let them have their say and then go on with my life. I also have a canine friend who loves me unconditionally and is always ready to give me love back no matter the circumstances. Thats a nice thing.

I think your life sounds wonderful, and can't imagine why your girl friends are critical! Perhaps a few new friends would be more accepting of your life. Yet, all of us need to have more than one friend, perhaps one or two very close friends, and then several good friends could make a real difference in your life. Perhaps you and your husband could find some couple friends!

Our animals are sometimes our best friends, just because of what you said-- they love us no matter what.

I certainly wish you the very best-- and hope that your friends can see that you're really happy with the way things are-- and leave you be. Take care!

SoCaGal -- "..only the two individuals in the relationship really know what the facts are." ---Sorry to get a little philosophical here, but that sums it up for me when it comes to human relationships/friendships. Everyone's perception of 'reality' is different; it's poignantly exemplified in real vs. nominally real. 'Friends' often forget that they are humans first, and intellectuals second. ;)

Dowser, thanks for being one of the most "real" people on this website. I wish I was more like you. I better stop here, because I don't want to get mushy.......

Dear Jim-- I love you, too! :-)

Please be careful out there, amongst 'em... You are always welcome here, where it's safe. Blah, too, probably, but safe!

I've missed you dearly and my other friends on the Vine.

I have taking care of my quail, working in the garden, and playing with my dogs...and petting the horses.... and...........

A 29 year old friend was injured in a blast in Afghanistan last week. He has head trauma, memory loss, and is paralyzed on one side. He is in Georgia on his way to Tampa, FL according to his younger brother. He has a wife and 3 children... and I am very worried about him. He called us a month or so ago just before he left. This was his upteenth trip to war and he had already suffered a severe concussion from an explosion on his previous trip and had short term memory loss.

I have known this young man and his brother for the last 13 years...and they are like my kids... and this one went through a very tragic accident several years ago -- which led to him enlisting in the Army and leaving this area. He calls us from time to time, and comes by to visit when he is on leave and in the area - which is not often.

I would appreciate your prayers and good thoughts for my friend and his family.

Hey Dowser. This is a wonderful article. It makes me realize how truly valuable a good friendship is. Thanks for a great article! ♥♥♥Dowser♥♥♥

As we move through life, gather your friends closely to you, share your heart, and care about one another. Not only is it good for your mental health, it is good for your physical health, as well!

No one has ever said it better =).
